Brianna and David {Fool’s Gold}

Quickly- far too quickly it seemed, David and Brianna were settling into David’s car. All the way down the elevator David had held Brianna’s hand in one of his own and dragged her suitcase behind them with the other hand. David couldn’t help the smile that seemed fixed on his face at seeing Brianna again. He really had missed her. 6 months was a long time for two of them to be apart, especially considering that over the last 2 years, not one month would go by being apart from each other.
There had been other women of course in the last little while, a few dates and other lovers, but none of them were quite the same. With them it had been like going through the actions, kiss here, touch there-nothing nearly as meaningful as what was with Brianna.
This thought stopped David short, “Meaningful”? No. Just another fuck, just another girl, he reminded himself. It was alarming how many times David had caught himself thinking ridiculously like this, that Brianna meant much more to him than just another girl. With a stiff reminder to himself, he tensed and turned to stare at Brianna. He couldn’t help the sharp annoyance that ran through him at her, piercing her with his quick glare he turned back to look ahead as he settled back into his seat. Concentrate, David.
“Stupid. Fucking stupid is what you are.” David’s thoughts raced as he mentally scolded himself “Why did you bring her along?” There weren’t many reasons anymore for David to want Brianna, or even pretend to love her. There weren’t many reasons why he should have even thought about her after graduating. From the beginning the plan had been to win her heart and then crush it, along with her ego and completely unwarranted self-confidence. When had that changed? Perhaps it had changed once David had realized that what Brianna had wasn’t self-confidence, it was only half assed lies that even she didn’t believe.
Awake with her late into the nights, tracing the skin her back, kissing the pale skin on her neck talking or tangling their limbs together as the smell of their sweat and sex filled the air, David had discovered that Brianna’s self-esteem and self-image was beyond rock bottom. He hadn’t had the heart to break her- and he still didn’t. The plan had been to stay away for good after graduation but he had broken this rule too.
To distract himself from his thoughts, David started the car and let his GPS lead him out of the city and towards his destination. “It’s almost a 20 hour drive.” He said to Brianna without looking over at her, “So get comfy.” With a few moments consideration, in a much quieter and gentler tone he added “Let me know if you need anything.” Weak
It felt so liberating to hear the door shut behind her as they made their way downstairs and to David’s car. The best part had definitely been walking past the front desk with David not loosening his grip on her hand. He’d never touched her much in public, especially when people were watching. In her giddiness, she’d flashed a smile at Vincent as he manned the front desk. His sour expression at seeing her with another guy not a week after their hookup was lost on her as she gave him a small wave good bye. Belatedly she realized that he’d most likely talk if her father confronted him asking for details on Brianna’s travel partner. Oh well, I’d have told them anyway… eventually.
After watching David put her luggage in the back seat, Brianna slid into the passenger seat. A grin was working to take over her lips, but she did her best to keep a look of nonchalance in place. No big deal. Just going on a trip with my boyfriend… She turned her face to the window to allow a small smile to escape briefly, then dug in her bag to retrieve her sunglasses. Looking up, she caught a glimpse of the glare that David had shot her way. Raising an eyebrow, she slipped on her sunglasses and turned to face the windshield.
It’s not a big deal. Just go with it. He’s probably thinking of something else… But it was hard to not feel disappointed. This is going to be great; don’t ruin it. Pushing her mouth into a smile, she turned to look at him as he spoke, relaxing slightly as his tone softened. You worried for nothing, she scolded herself.
Their exit from the city went as smoothly as it could; David shushing her impatiently only when traffic was thick, which proved to be pretty consistent for the most part. When they were finally free of the car clogged city, Brianna relaxed back in her seat and began to fill David in on what had been going on in her life. Of course some parts were glossed over, she never told him just how many agencies had turned her down, while others were left out completely. It was so nice to be able to talk like this again, though she realized after about 4 hours that her chatter might be wearing David’s patience thin.
They stopped at a mall after nearly 5 hours of driving. Complaining of a sore back, Brianna insisted that they walk around for a bit. It was only after David threatened to leave her that she reluctantly left the Coach store that she’d discovered 20 minutes into their break. Sighing loudly, she buckled herself back into the seat and leaned her head against the window, silent for the first time since leaving New York.
Half an hour of silence passed before she grew bored of pouting and began to fiddle with the radio. Stopping on a station that played Top 40, she began singing along to the latest Katy Perry song. She caught a glimpse of the disgusted look on David’s face before he reached over and violently changed the channel. The sound he made stopped the protest that she’d been preparing. “What the hell? Can we at least listen to something with words?” A few minor struggles for control later and they had settled on some station that played Sinatra and big band music. Neither of them were very happy with the selection, but Brianna insisted that they stick with it; her dad always listened to this stuff so she could tolerate it more than the annoying music David had been trying to force on her.
The sky outside was growing darker in an eerie way. As Brianna was opening her mouth to comment on it, a handful of large raindrops hit the window with such force that she could have easily been convinced that someone was throwing rocks at them. She jumped and gripped the edges of her seat. Bad weather had always bothered her, even more when she was traveling. As if the sky could read her mind, it opened up; rain covering the windshield in a thick layer that made it almost impossible to see.
A small, pitiful sound escaped through her clenched teeth. She should have stayed home. They were going to crash… During the next few minutes while she ran through horrible scenarios of what might happen to them, David somehow managed to navigate the car off onto an exit that seemed mostly deserted. Brianna didn’t realize that they had stopped until David cut the engine and looked over at her. Through the rain she could barely make out the outline of a rundown motel, neon “vacancy” sign glowing a tacky shade of pink through the murky darkness. “There is no fucking way I am going into one of those rooms.”
